On the journey she reminded herself of her priorities in order to keep the fear at bay. Ignore Dan and solve this mess quickly. Play the double-agent until Zdenka is safe. With so many factors unknown, it was easier said than done, so she did her best to enjoy the short ride. The sky was the kind of very pale blue which shows up ahead of a very hot day. The weather had been kind so far. Dan drove along by the estuary, which for the last few days had reflected the sky and would have looked like the Med if not for the distant industrial chimneys across the water in Kent. But the scenic distractions weren’t working for Eva. Dan was with her, conversation was strained, and danger was coming up fast.

“These people are sinister, Eva. And we don’t know how sinister as yet. You shouldn’t be going in there alone. Especially after all the digging we’ve been doing on Chesterton. He’s bound to know about it by now.”

“I have to go in, Dan. I need to get time with Zdenka in order to work on her. I have to. If I don’t this is finished already.”

“You’re getting to like taking risks, aren’t you?”

“No, that’s your department. I like following through on commitments.”

“Touché, Mademoiselle. So here we are. I’ll wait in the greasy spoon café down the end of the street. I’ll be within two minutes of you somewhere here no matter when you call. You’ll call me if you get into any trouble at all, okay? They’ve got a guy who looks like the Jolly Green Giant in there, minus the Jolly part.”

“How do you know?”

“It’s a story for another time. Just call me if there’s trouble.”

“I really won’t need to, Dan.”

“I’m really not arguing, Eva.”

She got out of the car at a red light around the corner of Hamlet Court Road and began to walk up the hill past the line of stubby palm trees, the cafés with the smoking foreign guys, and the charity shops. Up ahead she saw three people standing in the morning sun outside Dormammu’s gates. James Winstanley, Zdenka Kruz, and the not so Jolly Green Giant. The giant looked like a Play-Doh man sculpted by a boy who liked superhero comics, all oversize arms, big chest and skinny legs. The big guy finished talking and went inside leaving Winstanley standing with Zdenka. The girl saw Eva and gestured with her smoking cigarette and Winstanley turned and started beaming at her. For a louse-scoundrel dirt-bag, he was still pretty good looking. Somewhere behind her Dan was watching every move.

“Good morning, Eva. This is a very pleasant surprise. By now I thought you’d finished with us and told DI Rowntree where to stick it.”

“Sorry to disappoint you, James, but I don’t give up that easily.”

“What good news that is.”

James Winstanley leaned in to give her a kiss on the cheek, but Eva stayed well back and squeezed his arm instead. Winstanley accepted the rejection without any show of upset and then stood back.
